In the world today, there is a sharp rise in “sexy” clothing and revealing outfits. A common thing that you would hear from people is “If it offends you, don’t look.” The problem with this type of mindset is it actually elevates the sin that it causes people to commit and puts the responsibility for the person who struggles on them rather than the person who could help keep the person from sinning.
When we read through the Bible, we can see examples of people who put their own interests aside for the interests of their Christian brothers and sisters. Paul commands us to respect the frailties of our brethren in 1 Corinthians 8:13 which uses food, but anything that can make our brother or sister stumble can be used in place of food there. The purpose of modesty is not to punish one sex or the other, but to help the brothers and sisters reach their goal of heaven.
The issue then turns to the individual. Will you give up wearing revealing outfits, coverings, or whatever may make your brother or sister stumble? We tend to focus on women in this issue because of the revealing outfits that our society deems popular and trendy, but men can be just as guilty as women when it comes to modesty. In our culture, it is common for men to be shirtless or wear tight form fitting clothes, and these things make our sisters lust after men. Both men and women are responsible for not letting the other stumble, and it should be our goal to find and wear clothing that helps our brethren. Would it not be better to wear something that is not what society says is right and to wear a robe of white for eternity, than to look good to human eyes and to cause our brothers and sisters to miss that goal?
