“That is your gift, you can see the monsters.” This is a quote from the movie “Ms. Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.” In this movie, invisible monsters attack the home of these children, but there are some that are gifted with the ability to see the monsters. This is where the main character of the movie, Jake, comes in because he can see the monsters. In order to not give spoilers, that is where I will leave the retelling of the movie.
This statement struck me though, because of the fact that not everyone can see the monsters that they are dealing with. Galatians 6:1 says “Brothers, if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted,” (ESV). Paul was telling the people in Galatia to watch out for one another, and to restore the one who is fallen. When we have a friend who is struggling with a temptation it is easy for us to see that they need help, but they may think that they have everything under control. They cannot see the monster that is trying to take them captive. This is where we come in. We can see the monster and help them out, but we need to be prepared to help them the way that they need to be helped.
The other part of this verse should be noted too, “Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted.” When we help the brother or sister out, we need to keep ourselves safe so that we do not get taken by the same monster (temptation) that they are dealing with. We need to take care of ourselves so that we can take care of others as well. This is where Matthew 7:3-5 comes in. you cannot take a speck our of your brother’s eye if you do not take the log out of your own. This is why Paul directs this to those who are spiritual. Spiritual people are the ones who have overcome the temptation that the person is dealing with, but they likely still have their own temptations.
