Sit Still, Pray, and Look

At some point in all of our lives, we will feel panicked. What do we do when we feel this way? Do we turn to God and pray? Do we try and find the quickest way out? Do we just accept that we are in it and do nothing?

In 2 Kings 6:8-19, Elisha is surrounded by the Syrians. The king sent a great army to try and capture Elisha because of his interference with the king’s attempt to capture the king of Israel. Elisha’s servant was the one who told Elisha that they were surrounded, and he must have been panicking based on Elisha’s response. Elisha told the servant to not worry because ”…those who are with us are more than those who are with them (2 Kings 6:16 ESV).” Then Elisha prayed that the servant could see, and he saw a great army of angels with chariots of fire.

When we hit the hard times in life, we can become like the servant in this story too often. Just like he was only able to see the Syrian army around him, we only see the world around us and forget that we have God who is stronger than any earthly army. It is easy for us to feel surrounded and panic, but we need to be like Elisha and sit still and pray for is to see the great army of the Lord around us.

One of the most comforting things for us is the fact that God will never abandon His people. When the people of Israel went into captivity, He went with them (Ezekiel 10). What we need to do is sit still, pray, and look for the great things that God has done and will do for us.
