Mother’s Day is here, and the Bible has a lot to say about mothers. When we look at the Bible, we may think to ourselves that it only gives some instructions about raising children, but I want to focus on a proverb about what a Godly woman looks like. Proverbs was recorded by King Lemuel about when his mother told him about finding a wife. This proverb has a lot of wisdom in it about how a mother and wife should be, and we can see some examples of mothers and wives in the Bible who fit these descriptions. I want to share a few of these examples with you.
In verse 15 it says, “She rises while it is yet night, and provides food for her household, and a portion for her maidservants.” When we read this verse, we can see a woman who seeks to provide for others even when it may not be comfortable to do so. This verse reminds me of Jochebed in Exodus 2. When she had given birth to Moses, she decided to put him in a basket to save him from the Egyptians who sought to kill him. Even though it was uncomfortable for her to do, she trusted that God would watch over her child.
In verse 21 it says, “She is not afraid of snow for her household, for all her household is clothed with scarlet.” This verse indicates that she gives the household all of the things that they need. This reminds me of Hannah in 1 Samuel 2:19. She would go to the Tabernacle where Samuel was and would bring him a new robe every year. Hannah dedicated Samuel to serve in the Tabernacle, but she made sure that he was well-clothed even while she was away from him.
In verse 27 it says, “She watches over her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness.” This verse points to her taking care of her household and is pointing to her teaching her children the right way. This verse reminds me of Samson’s mother in Judges 13 and how she raised him according to the way that God instructed her.
There are many other excellent examples of mothers that we can find in the Bible. We should be thankful for Godly mothers whether they are our mothers or are mothers that we can look to in the Bible or great mothers that we can think about in the world today.
