Dried Out Faith

One of my favorite things to play with as a kid was playdoh. I remember making different things like people, turtles, or whatever I could think of when I was playing with it. One of the worst parts about playdoh though is that if you leave it out for too long, it will dry up and not be useful anymore. The reason that it dries up is that the water in the dough evaporates and makes it harder to mold. You can fix it by slowly adding water to it, but that still could cause it to not be the same anymore.

One of the biggest issues with people’s faith is that over time it can dry up and become useless. This can happen to anyone at any time, and there is a clear biblical example that we can look at in Elijah. In 1 Kings 19:1-18 we can see Elijah being out in the wilderness by himself because he escaped Jezebel’s wrath after the events on Mount Carmel. After a great spiritual victory for Elijah when he showed God’s power to all the people on the mountain, he then has a spiritual depression where he feels very far from God. Then in verses 11-12 we have a story about Elijah not finding God in the great events of nature, but instead in a still small voice. Elijah’s faith had gotten to the point of no longer being strong and molded by God but had instead hardened and weakened to the point he wanted to give up. God then tells him how he will help Elijah out of this and get him back on the right track.

There are many times that we may feel weak in our faith, but we need to look to God and his word to get us back on the right track. That means that we need to pray more, and we need to study our Bibles more. We cannot forget about God or else we will be by ourselves and the battle against the forces of evil in this world will be unwinnable.
