In DC Comics, there is a hero called Firestorm. Firestorm is made up of two people who combine to make one hero. One of the two that make up the hero is named Martin Stein, and he is the old professor who created the apparatus that allows them to combine. One of the weaknesses of Firestorm is that they must combine or else Martin begins to weaken to the point of death. Martin by himself can withstand high rates of nuclear radiation, but he does not have near the number of abilities that he has when he is combined with the other half of Firestorm.
This is the same with us and Christ. We can do a lot of things, but we can do so much more if we are combined with Christ and His greater ability. The same can be said about us needing to be connected with Christ, or else we will weaken to the point of spiritual death.
In Philippians 4:13 Paul says, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me,” (ESV). Paul is discussing how he is able to go through any hardship and overcome it, just as long as Christ is there by his side. In Firestorm, they are two entities, but one controls the body that does all the fighting and Martin is the mind that helps to empower the duo. In this instance, we are more like the other half of Firestorm that controls what we do, but we need to listen to what our partner is saying. He knows how to direct us and what is best for us. If we follow Christ, there is no enemy that we cannot overcome. We are one half of a dynamic duo, but we need to be a duo to be dynamic. Without Christ we are easily defeated, but with Him, we are unbeatable.
